Description

From the foreword of Fragmented Beauty: The Art of Karen Kettering Dimit:

"When entering into the exhibition, Fragmented Beauty: The Art of Karen Kettering Dimit, the viewer is first struck by the strength and beauty of the work.  Then they are enticed to look at the astonishing handling of the materials; fragments of carved stone; cleaved glass; dazziling minerals; manipulated metals; and splashed paint.  As the viewer engages with the art, historical and contemporary references reveal themselves, and deeper meanings begin to emerge.  Never didactic or preachy, Dimit's powerful, thought-provoking work may be read on many levels.

Although the works in this 20-year retrospective are wide-ranging, there is a formal and conceptual consistency.  Dimit's art bears witness to the beauty and preciousness of our life force under threat from the destructive nature of the human condition. As she says in her artist statement, 'My artworks deal with conflicts inherent in the human condition that current events bring into high relief.  Historical references are are contrasted with modern elements to express a collective sense of what we have become.  I utilize materials that have relevance beyond the material's basic decorative function, striving to find the confluence of the narrative, process and material.'"
